Buckle up, heroes! Blizzard Entertainment will drop another collaboration event for their hero shooter, Overwatch 2, in the coming weeks. This time, it's a crossover with Blizzard's famous MMORPG, World of Warcraft! This isn't the first time Blizzard has dipped their toes into both games, following their crossover with Diablo 4 around Halloween last year.
It's been revealed that heroes Reinhardt, Widowmaker, Zenyatta, and Torbjorn will be treated to a legendary WoW-themed skin in this event, with other details yet to be revealed. Please keep reading for everything we know so far about the Overwatch 2 x WoW crossover, including the release date.
The official trailer for the Overwatch 2 x World of Warcraft crossover event will be released on Friday, September 13.
Keeping in line with their traditional Tuesday updates for Overwatch 2, we can assume that Blizzard will release the WoW collaboration onto Overwatch servers on September 17 at the earliest and September 23 at the latest. This is because Blizzard has revealed this event will 100% be happening in September ahead of WoW's 20th anniversary.
Overwatch 2 usually adheres to the global timelines outlined below:
Like all in-game events, it will likely run for two to three weeks, putting a possible end date on October 1, 2024, just in time for Overwatch 2 Season 13 to begin later in the month.
According to the official Overwatch 2 X (formerly Twitter) account, four skins will be released in connection to the OW2 x WoW event. These will be legendary skins for Reinhardt, Zenyatta, Torbjorn, and Widowmaker.
The inspiration behind Widowmaker's skin is Sylvanas Windrunner, revealed at the start of Season 12. She will keep her signature purple-toned skin, starring with Sylvanas' signature long ears, armor, and flowing cape. In WoW, Sylvanas is known to be Hunter or Ranger, which fits perfectly with Widowmaker's sniping capabilities.
We don't know what the Zenyatta, Reinhardt, and Torbjorn skins will look like. We will update this article as soon as more information comes to light.
We can also assume the two previous WoW-inspired skins for Symmetra and Genji will be released back into the shop. These two skins were rare, only obtainable by purchasing an IRL or virtual BlizzCon 2019 ticket. There have also been hints that the legendary Frostmourne sword will be Season 12's Mythic Weapon.
What this WoW crossover with Overwatch 2 entails so far, we have yet to find out. However, like these previous crossovers, the Transformers and Cowboy Bebop, there will be event-themed challenges giving free rewards upon completion. These freebies could include Battle XP, player titles, player icons, and maybe even a cheeky free skin.
Based on the Season 12 trailer featuring the Lich King sound effects, there could be a potential WoW-themed game mode coming to Overwatch 2. We will have to wait and see to find out.
