The group stage of the Leipzig Major concluded today, with multiple upset results setting the stage for a chaotic playoff bracket. An underperforming VP and Liquid are slated to meet in the lower bracket for a best-of-one with their tournament lives on the line, while Nigma and EG headline the upper bracket openers.
Though KuroKy’s men had to earn their spot at Leipzig the hard way by fighting through the WePlay! Bukovel Minor, they comfortably topped their group here. After their successful comeback against TNC after losing to an Io/Faceless setup, w33’s Outworld Devourer marked the foundation of the equalizer, with a one-sided decider to follow.
The SEA side then proceeded to lose to Team Aster 2-0, a shock result which saw them drop down to the lower bracket of the Leipzig Major, setting up a best-of-one match against Reality Rift.
Vici versus Secret was the big match of the group, and Puppey’s men managed to get revenge for their recent loss at the ONE Esports Dota 2 World Pro Invitational Singapore in a grindy series. They then went on to crush beastcoast, a side which surprised many with their day one match against Chaos, the only time their trademark aggression worked out in their favor. Vici did manage to fight back for the second upper bracket slot though, taking out YawaR and co. before winning their brawl against the South American side, who gave a good account of themselves despite playing with a stand-in.
Concerns continue to grow about the new-look VP side who started off their Leipzig adventure in such an underwhelming fashion it may very well end in the first round of the playoffs. The CIS side’s veteran players put in woeful performances against Alliance, and things only got worse in light of their 2-0 loss to SEA side Reality Rift in the losers’ match.
Since Na’Vi’s surprise showing pushed Liquid into the lower bracket as well, these two juggernauts will meet in the lower bracket much earlier than anyone would have anticipated prior to the event.
And yet, perhaps the biggest surprise of the Leipzig Major so far was Na’Vi’s success in Group D, beating both EG and Liquid to take first spot in convincing fashion. This, of course, meant that one of EG and Liquid – who seem to keep running into one another at big events in the groups – would drop down to the lower bracket. It was EG who won the close-run decider match, avoiding a matchup with VP… and being rewarded with a clash against Nigma instead.
The opening round offers many mouth-watering clashes, with the Nigma-EG match and the classic Na’Vi-Alliance matchup in the upper bracket coupled with the VP-Liquid elimination match promising an exciting day of Dota. You can find all round one playoff matches below:
